The manufacturing technology, when combined with quality materials including straight grain hard maple action parts, spruce keys and Japanese hammers, results in a responsive touch from a durable action.

McPHAIL PIANO TONE:

By design, McPhail Pianos have an "American" rather than "Asian" tone, often described as "warm" rather than "cool".  Warm tone results from rich harmonics and long sustain.  A cool tone is bright and quick.
We briefly consider three areas of piano construction which contribute to the nature of tone.

American Tone
Low tension scale
Sand cast iron plate
Hard frame
Asian Tone
High tension scale
"V-Pro" iron plate
Soft frame

Tension, one aspect of overall scale design, literally refers to how tightly the piano is strung. A tighter string will return to rest more quickly after being set into vibration and therefore have shorter sustain. Frequently a high tension design will give an instrument initial power when string is first struck by hammer, but fast decay of sound.

Iron plate together with the wood frame, compensate for some 23 tons of cumulative tension exerted by more than 200 steel strings. The traditional sand cast plate, still used on all of the worlds' great pianos, is musically inert and will produce a dull knock when struck by a knuckle. The V-Pro (Vacuum Process) plate by contrast, due to the manufacturing process and materials used, can produce a ringing sound and encourages bright tone.

Wood frame also provides structural support and should be musically inert.  A hard frame will enhance sustain by reflecting sound and vibrations back to the soundboard rather than absorb them.  McPhail pianos have rims made of American hard maple and birch rather than softer, less expensive "lauan mahogany" usually used in Asian rims.
